Our Pet Health Recommendations

If you’re new to DeRidder, Fort Polk or Leesville, LA, there are some pet health recommendations that are important for keeping your pets healthy in our area. Three things we highly recommend include parasite prevention, yearly blood work, and having your pet microchipped.

In our mild climate, parasites are active all year long. If you’re moving to our area, be sure to apply flea, tick, and heartworm prevention to your pet before your arrival. These medications often protect against other parasites, too, including hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and more.

Some preventatives we recommend include:

  • ProHeart 6 or 12 (an injectable heartworm preventative for dogs that protects them for 6-12 months depending on the dose given)
  • Bravecto for cats and dogs (an oral and topical flea and tick preventative that lasts for up to 12 weeks.)
  • Revolution for cats (a monthly topical solution for fleas, ticks, and heartworms)

Blood work is an invaluable tool in veterinary medicine. In our climate, bacteria, viruses, and other infections thrive. Parasites, too, can transmit dangerous diseases. Blood work allows us to assess your pet’s internal health by measuring different components of the blood.

Blood tests we run include:

  • Complete blood count (measures the number of red and white blood cells as well as platelets)
  • Blood chemistry panels (measures certain blood components such as proteins, electrolytes, glucose, etc.)
  • Heartworm testing (detects the presence of heartworms in dogs and cats)

Learn more about what your pet’s blood test results mean from our Blood Work Summary!

Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet. It involves placing a tiny device between your pet’s shoulder blades that emits a unique identification code. This code corresponds to your contact information in the microchip company’s database. A microchip is the surest way of identifying your pet if they get lost, as ID tags and collars can easily fall off, or be removed. Additionally, a microchip is often a requirement for international pet health certificates.
